I loved this post. It resonated with me so much about how you have journaled differently in different stages of life. I have done the same but always found it hard to move into different layouts, systems etc. But the reality is that as long as we're enjoying what we're doing, does it matter if we've deviated from our last journal entry? Or if we've missed an entry or two? Definitely not! It's there to support us and be a creative outlet when we need it. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
Thank you so much. This means a lot to me. I agree- your journal is yours and you should feel free to do whatever you want with it. It’s ok if none of the layouts match. 💕
I have also kept journals for most of my life. The first one I can remember had a unicorn in the cover and came with a key. Pretty sure I used one of those multi-color pens where you clicked the color you wanted to write with. I journaled regularly in college. Cringy reflections like, “Just like the flowers bounced back after the rain, I will bounce back after this breakup .” 😆 But it has always been the best place for me to process.
Also, I also get Elsie’s newsletter! Do you listen to Elsie and Emma’s podcast, too?
Journaling is such a beautiful habit! Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your creative world! I journaled off and on as a child, but was never super consistent and didnt keep my journals, mainly out of embarrassment sadly. Would love to look at them with the more forgiving lense that time gives us. I do have an old blog I kept during my cancer journey in my 20s. It helped me process my big feelings and also keep people updated on my treatment progress. I have not revisited my blog in many years, but am glad that I can if I need to down the road.
Journaling really does help a lot with processing the big feelings! I’m glad you had the blog to help get you through that difficult time! Thank you for the thoughtful comment!
I love how your journaling habit evolved over time to suit your needs. I think it’s natural to take a pause in some hobbies as we adapt to the different responsibilities entering adulthood has to offer us. And I’m glad you found your way back to something you enjoy! I’ve journaled on and off since I was a kid, and my style has definitely changed over the years. At the moment my “big, red journal” is mainly my Hobonichi Cousin because it keeps my planning and journaling together in one spot. Although I would call what I do “memory keeping”, I like to keep track of what happened during any given day and maybe doodle a little bit, add stickers, etc. Right now that works for me.
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment!! I’ve heard good things about the Hobonichi notebooks but I’ve yet to see one in person. Memory keeping is a great way to think of journaling. I’m glad you’re enjoying your practice!
I love this! Journaling has been a form of therapy. And it’s more fun with washy tape haha!
Totally agree! It’s really a great habit to keep for life.

Laurie, I have to ask… did your first journal come from the book fair? My little girl has one just like that!
And yay for finding another Beautiful Mess fan! I do listen to the podcast and it’s a bright spot in my week. It makes me look forward to Mondays! 💕
I am almost positive it came from the book fair. 😆
